Need some suggestions for home office desk?
Hello, I would like to turn a bedroom into a home office. The room has either a window or door on every wall. My thought was to make a desk out of a fer mica counter top. I would like it to be "L" shaped. Can we buy a counter top that would look like that or will one have to be cut?

Formica counter tops are available in a variety of shapes and sizes. Check the phone book and call all of the home and garden centers, builders' supply and hardware stores in your area.

I have a desk space like you describe. I used a 2x4 in the corner for support and set the ends on a pair of 2 drawer filing cabinets. I think it works great.
Go to your local hardware stores. There are usually pieces there for a fraction of the original price and many have a corner already in it. Many have been ordered and not picked up so there is nothing wrong with these.
Check with your local home improvement store. I think it would have to be cut, but there's the possibility that they may have seconds that were cut for a specific job and then didn't fit that you could use. If the windows don't come down too far on the wall, you could put the desk underneath them. In years past, I made a nice desk using two 2-drawer file cabinets and a hollow core door that was cheap because they'd drilled the hole for the door knob in the wrong place. I put the hole to the back and used it for routing computer cables up from underneath.
You can buy one either online or from local stores. You may need to reshape (cut) it, if you want a specific form. I also want to add some interior design suggestions that you should probably take into consideration:

1. Imagine one day working at home. This is very useful to determine the exact position of your desk: it should not interfere with your domestic activities, nor should it affect the general plan of your room. I suggest to place it near or under the window.

2. You should decide from the beginning if there's any aspect of your room you want to preserve, that is if there's anything else you want that room for, except for a home office. This is important because it gives you a good perspective on how you want to use your space. Don't forget about your other activities while creating your workspace.

3. Fermica counter tops are great and easy to handle. They also render an impression of coldness, but I think you've already covered that aspect.

Hope this helps,
